Sports Therapy Descriptor Approved by ASA

The SRTC has been working with the industry regulator to gain Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) approval of a descriptor for the discipline of sports therapy. The descriptor ensures that sports therapists can promote their practice citing the approved benefits without fear of complaints being made to the ASA by detractors of the profession. To view the ASA approved descriptor for sports therapy see below:

Sports Therapy descriptor

Sports therapy uses a range of therapeutic techniques for the prevention, recognition and treatment of minor sports injuries or related wear and tear. It can also be used to provide support with people wanting to maintain and improve fitness.

A typical session will involve appraising the injury using a number of techniques including posture analysis, gait analysis, biomechanical assessment, as well as soft tissue assessment. The session itself may include soft tissue therapy, mechanical and electrical treatment, cooling or warming therapy and mobilisation.

Sports therapy may be used to address an extensive range of injuries and illness. Sports therapy may also be found to be helpful in the mental preparation of athletes for sporting participation.

Choosing a practitioner

It is important to choose a qualified sports therapist who has undertaken all the necessary training to understand the theory and practice of this therapy area.

By choosing sports therapists registered with the member organisations of the SRTC you can be confident that they are professionally trained, qualified and insured.

HPC confirms regulation unlikely

The SRTC has challenged the HPC recommendation to statutory regulate sports therapy.
The SRTC has received a response from the HPC Director of Policy & Standards which confirms that this is highly unlikely following the recent announcement that the government considers ‘assured voluntary regulation’ to be a better way of improving quality. The Command Paper ‘Enabling Excellence’ indicates that in future statutory regulation will only be considered in exceptional cases where voluntary registers are not considered sufficient to manage the risk. The SRTC believes that the HPC recommendation will be blocked by this change in government policy.

Sports Therapists are currently regulated by the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) supported and funded by the Department of Health www.cnhc.org.uk

Regulation of Sports Therapists

The SRTC is aware that there is conflicting information being circulated regarding the regulation of sports therapists and we believe that some clarification is needed.

Sports therapists are currently regulated by the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the government-backed voluntary regulator that is funded and supported by the Department of Health (DH). The DH advises GPs to recommend patients who are seeking sports therapy to consult with practitioners who are registered with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council. This is evidenced in the DH October GP Bulletin click here

In 2006 an application was made by the Society of Sports Therapists to the Health Professions Council (HPC) for the statutory regulation of sports therapists however following consultation with the DH it was decided to apply voluntary regulation to the profession via the CNHC.

Despite the decision by the DH to apply voluntary regulation to sports therapists it appears that therapists are being incorrectly told that the statutory regulation of their profession is imminent. While the FHT supports the protection of title for sports therapists it believes that informing the profession that it is just around the corner is misleading and unprofessional.

The SRTC has been in contact with the Policy and Standards department of the HPC and has been informed that;

"There has been no decision from the Government to date as to whether they
will [statutory] regulate sports therapists and as such there is currently no timetable
for this regulation to take place. The HPC would not carry out any further
work with regard to the possible [statutory] regulation of sport therapists until the
Government decides that this profession should be [statutory] regulated."
